CFB Coaching Carousel: Dave Doeren’s contract, how it compares
With an upcoming trip to the bowl after another nine-game winning campaign, NC State football coach Dave Doeren has already made some extra cash this season (9-3, 6-2 ACC).
In April, he signed a two-year contract extension until 2025 and increased his salary.
But where does Nine-year-old NC State Doeren stack up against other college football coaches?
The contract extension Doeren signed is $ 3.5 million per year, with an additional $ 1.3 million in potential bonuses. Doeren’s current salary is in the middle of the CCA, according to USA Today’s college football head coach salary database.
Doeren’s previous deal, a five-year contract signed in 2019, was worth $ 3.25 million per year and lasted the entire 2023 season.
After leading his team to an 8-4 record (7-3 in ACC) in the 2020 season, athletic director Boo Corrigan offered Doeren the overtime with the raise of $ 250,000.
Having already won a bonus of $ 100,000 for winning nine games this year, some of the other bonuses listed in this expansion are still in play for Doeren.
He’ll get at least $ 25,000 for playing a game of bowls – and $ 50,000 for a bowl victory. Given that a bowl win would take the Wolfpack to 10 wins, Doeren would also see the $ 100,000 he already earned for reaching nine wins jump to $ 150,000 if NC State hit double-digit wins.
Doeren will receive an additional $ 50,000 if his team finishes in the top 25 of the final college football playoff standings. The NC state is currently n ° 18.
If the Wolfpack finishes in the top 15, Doeren will get $ 100,000.
For winning nine games, there is also a bonus for his staff pay pool to increase by $ 300,000. With 10 wins, that number would drop to $ 400,000.
This bonus is huge considering the work of defensive coordinator Tony Gibson. In the last game of the regular season, the Pack were down seven starters in defense. NC State was second in the ACC in scoring defense, third in total defense and third in the rush run. The Wolfpack defense also led the league in interceptions. Gibson could be an attractive name in the market for teams looking to improve on this side of the ball.
How Doeren’s Salary Stacks in ACC
Like Doeren, Mack Brown’s latest deal, signed in March, also runs until 2025 and is worth $ 3.5 million a year.
In the ACC, Clemson’s Dabo Swinney is in a league of his own. The 10-year deal he signed in 2019 is worth $ 9.3 million a year and runs until 2028.
At least six ACC coaches have started this college football season with contracts worth more than Doeren’s current deal annually, according to the latest USA Today salary database.
Among them are Pat Narduzzi of Pittsburgh ($ 4.8 million) and Dave Clawson of Wake Forest, who will meet this weekend in the ACC Championship game. Clawson recently signed an extension, but the terms were not disclosed. His previous contract earned him $ 3.6 million, according to the USA Today database.
Mike Norvell of Florida State, who just finished his second season at the helm of the Seminoles, has a six-year contract that runs until 2025 and is worth $ 4.4 million a year. Norvell is 0-2 against Doeren and went 8-13 in his first two seasons as FSU coach.
Bronco Mendenhall of Virginia ($ 4.25 million), in his sixth season, leads the Cavaliers 36-38. He is also 0-2 against Doeren.
Syracuse coach Dino Babers ($ 3.5 million) led the Orange to a bowl game in six seasons and is 1-5 against Doeren.
Former Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuentte ($ 4.25 million), who was fired on Nov. 16, was among the ACC coaches who did more than Doeren.
Boston College and Miami private school tax records were not available when USA Today last updated its database in October. Many coaches, including Doeren and Brown, have also agreed to pay cuts in response to the pandemic.
Impact of the coaching carousel
With a coaching carousel that has already seen big jobs like LSU, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and USC open up, a number of schools have agreed to big expansions with their coaches in an effort to keep them.
James Franklin of Penn State recently signed a 10-year extension worth $ 7.5 million per year. The Nittany Lions are 11-10 over the past two seasons.
In his second season as Michigan State head coach, Mel Tucker led the Spartans to 10 wins. It ended in a big payday as he signed a 10-year, $ 95 million contract this month.
Over the past two years, Doeren has led the Pack to a 17-7 record.
With his accomplishments and a number of programs, like Penn State and Michigan State, agreeing to new deals in a bid to retain their coaches as jobs continue to open up, will NC State follow suit with a new okay for Doeren?
Doeren’s name hasn’t revolved around the current openings, which should put Wolfpack fans at ease. But, in recent days, jobs are opening up as quickly as they are filled.
Doeren’s current contract runs until the end of calendar year 2025.
