Charleston Rallies after Elon, 7-6
MT. PLEASANT, SC – Elon University baseball took a 5-0 lead but couldn’t hold back College of Charleston in the home stretch as the Phoenix (20-20, 9-8 CAA) fell 7 -6 Friday night May 21 at Patriots Point.
ON THE MONTTE
Joe sprake (6-1) took the loss after giving up two runs on two hits and three goals. Joe savino held the Cougars (24-22, 12-11) scoreless in a 5.1 innings start. He scattered four hits and pitched while hitting five. Jared wetherbee and Will Gambino were both scored for two runs, each having thrown 0.2 raised inning, and Trevor Kirk was responsible for the other round in 1.0 round off the pen.
AT THE PLATE
All nine Elon starters had a hit in the loss. Anthony Galason continued his hot bat by finishing 3-for-5, scored once and drove in one run. Adam spurlin hit 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs and an RBI. Multi-shot efforts were also shot Justin cassella and Cole reynolds both went 2 for 5. Cassella added a run and stolen base to her totals. Nick Cicci succeeded and led in two points in a 1 for 4 exit.
Elon opened the scoring with four runs in the top of the fourth. Galason started with a shot to the right and advanced to second on a Cole reynolds land short. Cicci then led a 2-2 throw over the left wall to give the brown and gold the lead, 2-0. Stonehouse chose the left side and landed on a triple Spurlin in the corner of right field. After Jack roberts Victim of a foul on first base, Cassella reached on a choked shot by the CDC first baseman. The mistake allowed Spurlin to cross the plate and extend Elon’s lesad to 4-0. The Phoenix then tacked on another point in the sixth. With two strikeouts, Spurlin picked the center and moved up to second on a pitch error. The Ty Ty, Georgia native then scored on another fielding error as Roberts made a left field single.
The Cougars finally broke through in the half of the sixth at home. With two outs and runners in goal position, a strike down the middle reduced Elon’s lead to 5-2. The home side then shot 5-4 in the seventh inning as Trotter Harlan led by two runs with a brace away from the right. In the eighth, the Cougars shot even 5-5 with a base loaded walk. A single from the left side allowed two more points to come home as CofC took their first lead of the game, 7-5. Cassella started the ninth with a single left and Iadisernia worked a full count to get the runners into the first second. Cassella was sent home on a Galason shot from the left side as Elon made a one-run game at 7-6, but Reynolds had a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.
– It was the first loss of the season for Sprake.
– Elon beat Charleston, 14-11.
– The Phoenix left eight riders on base.
– Cicci was 2 for 2 throwing runners trying to fly.
– Elon hit 5-for-21 (.238) with the runners and 3-for-12 (.250) with the runners in goal position.
– Tonight was Galason’s fifth consecutive multi-hit game and fourth in a row with three or more hits.
– It was the 16th game in one set Elon has played this season. The Phoenix are now 11-5 in race-decided games.
The defeat sets up a rubber match at 1 p.m. tomorrow. The winner will secure a spot in the CAA tournament as the second team in the South Division.
