COVID Survivor Wins $ 1 Million NC Lottery Scratch Prize
A grandfather of six from North Carolina won a lottery jackpot a year after being hospitalized with COVID-19.
Donalise Stewart of Timberlake said he didn’t know what prompted him to stop and buy lottery tickets on his way home from work on Wednesday, December 8, according to a press release from the North Carolina Education Lottery.
“I was feeling a little depressed thinking about 1-2-2-4 because my grandmother passed away on December 24, so I decided to play them,” Stewart, a warehouse worker, told the lottery officials. âI was about to go out when someone stopped me and asked me if I was going to buy some scrapers. Next thing I know, I’m on my knees – just overwhelmed.
Stewart decided to buy a $ 10 âPlatinum 7sâ scratch ticket at the Timberlake Mart on Durham Road.
He told lottery officials that he spent 15 minutes “jumping for joy” around the store when he realized he had won a million dollar prize.
âI always wondered how I would react if I won,â said Stewart, according to The Lottery. âNothing prepares you for this feeling. I did not expect that. All I can say is dreams come true.
He told lottery officials the victory came a year after spending weeks in hospital with COVID-19.
âCome to think of it, a year ago I was in the hospital with COVID-19,â Stewart said, according to the lottery. âI was in the hospital for seven weeks. Now, a year later, here I am. Almost losing my life for real blessings.
Stewart collected his winnings on Thursday, December 9, and chose to win the prize in the form of a lump sum of $ 600,000, the lottery said. He took home $ 424,503 after tax and said the money “would come in handy.”
“COVID-19 screwed me up,” he told lottery officials. âIt will help reduce the pressure on medical bills. We will save and invest, maybe buy some land.
Timberlake is in Person County, approximately 45 miles from Raleigh.
