Jonas branch of Fairmont Senior named 2021 Boys Soccer Player of the Year in Gatorade, West Virginia
FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Fairmont Senior All-State Soccer Player Jonas Branch was named Men’s Soccer Player of the Year in Gatorade, West Virginia.
Branch has scored 30 goals and distributed 32 assists this season for a Polar Bears team that repeated their Double-A state championship title.
Branch, who leaves for West Virginia Wesleyan in the fall to continue his football career with the Bobcats, spoke to 12 Sports about being named the state’s top men’s football player.
“I am honored, personally, because to be a part of this is just a great experience. Few people experience it. Just me, being able to have that is great. I mean, I couldn’t ask for anything more, ”Branch said on Friday. “I have worked so hard this offseason. I knew from the start that I wanted to come back and win another state championship, so during the offseason I worked my butt and it paid off.
It certainly is.
Branch had this to say about the discovery that he had been chosen for the prize on Friday morning.
“My phone kind of started to explode,” Branch said with a laugh. “It was great. I was ecstatic.… When I found out I was very excited.
Branch is the third straight local player to win the award.
Robert C. Byrd’s Khori Miles received the honor for the 2019-2020 season, and Joseph Biafora of the University won it in 2018-2019.
Branch is the first Fairmont Senior male soccer player to win the award, which dates back to 1986.
