First period
Canes big kill: The top Ranger unit looked extremely dangerous, but Carolina survived. The rods will have to stay out of the box tonight. Raanta was huge. Rangers did everything BUT score on this PP.
First PP in New York: Seth Jarvis called for tripping after his skate cut Frank Vatrano in his way after the puck and Vatrano fell back.
Raanta also engaged: Alexis Lafrenière undresses Staal in the central zone and enters alone on Raanta on the breakaway. I tried to do a 5-hole backhand, and Raanta said no.
Shesterkin engaged early: Shesterkin with a big early save on Pesce after a nice pass from Aho.
Pre-match update
The Canes will start the Staal-Fast-Niederreiter line against a New York line from Lafrenière-Chytil-Motte.
morning update
No changes are expected to the Hurricanes roster, although Frederik Andersen was on the ice for morning practice for the first time since suffering the injury more than a month ago. In his best impression of Mark Messier, appropriate given the venue, Ian Cole insisted on Tuesday morning that “we are going to win this series”, before later clarifying: “There are no guarantees.”
Rangers manager Gerard Gallant also backed out of some of his tough talk after Game 3 when he was unhappy with the Max Domi-Ryan Lindgren fracas and threatened to drop Ryan Reaves on the Hurricanes.
“I’m an emotional guy,” Gallant said Tuesday afternoon. “The next morning, you laugh about it. It does not matter. Is something going to happen tonight? It won’t be the other night, if anything happens. Trust me, we’re trying to win a hockey game and get back in this series. »
Brendan Smith’s three-game point streak prior to Game 4 is one game away from the franchise playoff record for a defenseman (Frantisek Kaberle, 2006). Smith had 11 points in 49 career playoff games before that streak.
Wes McCauley and Eric Furlatt are the officials. Furlatt worked Game 5 of the Boston series. Devin Berg and Brad Kovachik are the linesmen.
