NC State vs. Vanderbilt in College World Series: game delayed
The start of NC State’s College World Series game with Vanderbilt on Friday is delayed due to health and safety protocols, the NCAA has announced, as the Wolfpack grapples with COVID-19.
The NCAA has said the game will now begin at 3:07 p.m., just over an hour later than originally planned.
In a statement to ESPN, announced during the pre-game broadcast on ESPN2, NC State Athletics said that “an undisclosed number of players on the team have been put into COVID-19 protocol and will not be available for today’s game. The State of North Carolina, the NCAA and affected parties are working together to monitor the situation. “
Vanderbilt posted his starting training around 1:15 p.m., but NC State has yet to release his training.
NC State must beat Vanderbilt today or in a possible Saturday game to achieve the best of three College World Series championships for the first time in program history.
NCAA COVID-19 protocols for participating College World Series teams called for negative antigen testing within one day of arrival or negative PCR testing within two days of arrival for all Level 1 staff , namely players, coaches and staff.
The same staff were tested upon arrival. Anyone who tested positive would be quarantined until confirmed negative. Otherwise, the teams were tested every two days by participating on site.
The Wolfpack have not played since defeating Vanderbilt, 1-0, on Monday. In an interview with the News & Observer on Thursday, NC State coach Elliott Avent said the players were ordered to rest, outside of practice, on days off. But he admitted that with so many family and friends around his players, he was not likely to comply.
âI hope everyone used it like me, to rest,â Avent said Thursday. âThey have been educated. But it is young people who are dazzled by this city and this pageantry that goes hand in hand with Omaha. So they have a lot of families here. It’s not just mom and dad anymore. They’re aunts and uncles and best friends and maybe high school coaches. So they have people shooting at them, so I’m sure they got out a bit more than me. Other than training, I haven’t left the confines of my hotel room.
