New West Virginia license plate, with box turtle, available | WDVM25 and DCW50
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles has announced the availability of a new wildlife license plate with the Eastern Box Turtle. Following in the footsteps of other wildlife plates, including the most popular white-tailed deer, elk and brook trout plates, the Box Turtle Plate will help raise funds for important conservation projects, as well as supporting the education and awareness efforts of the Division of Natural Resources. The choice to present the Eastern Box Turtle is due in large part to the extreme success of DNR’s “Citizen Science Project” focused on the box turtle in 2020. Over 6,000 recorded sightings have been received across the country. State, officials said.
According to Scott Warner, deputy head of wildlife diversity for MNR, “In 1996, voters in West Virginia approved a constitutional amendment that added an additional revenue stream of $ 15 per plate, with all profits going back. to the MNR Diversity Fund. Due to enthusiastic interest from outdoor enthusiasts statewide, approximately $ 300,000 is raised each year for conservation efforts, awareness, and education. “People are willing to pay this extra fee because they love the artwork and want to support wildlife programs at the same time,” Warner said.
For over 25 years now, the DMV and DNR have collaborated on wildlife license plates to increase awareness and funding. DMV Commissioner Everett Frazier is delighted to offer citizens another option when considering a license plate. “We produce over 100 different specialty / organization license plates. Many customers use these plates as an opportunity to present something meaningful to them. For the wildlife plaques, it also represents an opportunity to financially support a good cause, ”said Frazier.
Box turtle enthusiasts statewide can now get their hands on one of these plates by filling out the online form in the License Plate section of the Vehicles tab at dmv.wv.gov, or by visiting one of DMV’s regional offices across the state.
