CHARLESTON, Illinois – Daison Pursley earned his third victory in the Lucas Oil POWRi National Midget League on the final night of the Illiana Showdown at Charleston Speedway on Saturday night.
Brent Crews and Bryant Wiedeman followed him to the checkered flag and won their best POWRi finishes to date.
Starting fifth on the grid, Pursley got to work at the start with Emerson Axsom leading the first lap. Cole Bodine and Brent Crews fought for second place. Axsom continued to deviate from the rest of the field but behind him Pursley found himself taking second from Crews and setting his sights on the leader. Pursley threw a cursor on Axsom, but couldn’t get it to stick.
Axsom and Pursley exchanged heads, but as Axsom pulled away from the field he stopped for a flat left rear tire, which made the warning pop. Pursley took the lead in the restart. Returning to the green, Pursley pulled away from the field, but rookie Corey Day found a thicket below and rushed down the leader.
After a red flag at the end of the race for Jade Avedisian and Mitchell Davis, the peloton got back into place. Pursley continued to lead the way and led the 22-car checkered flag field, Crews had his career best result in second and Wiedeman had his career best result in third. Day was fourth and Joe B. Miller was fifth.
“Tonight it worked in my favor and Beau had this thing on track. that’s why we’re fast right now, and the consistency is there, and I feel like it’s time for those wins, ”said Pursley. “Having that good momentum before midget week in two weeks will be very important.”
